Sports day finishes well for Robins
A single goal was enough for Ashton to register their first league win of the season having played the final 65 minutes with 10 men at the Don Amott Arena. With John Pritchard injured Callum Dolan started on the left and after Nathan Modest had fired over the top from a tight angle for Sports, Connor Hughes had a low shot saved from Aaron Smith’s lay off.
With 5 minutes elapsed Smith collected a loose ball in midfield and advanced past 2 challenges before firing in to the bottom corner for his 3rd goal in 2 games. Clee’s pass was just too far ahead of Liam Tomsett with most of the play towards the home goal, and a great run down the left wing then took Dolan to the by line from where he fired narrowly wide across goal. Hughes then headed Tames’ cross from the by line back past the far post but on 25 minutes Warren’s pass through the middle saw Wilson bring down Modest sufficient for Mr Cooke to show the Ashton centre back a red card.
Batchelor then saw his header just saved by Carnell from Modest’s deep cross and Tvaroh’s overlapping run from right back led to him firing right across goal as the interval arrived.
Hunt picked up a booking which looked harsh for stopping ex-league player Lee Hughes which saw Warren’s free kick helped over by Batchelor and Hughes then squeezed his attempt into the side netting from a tight angle. Storer then made a good run into the area with his shot going for a corner off Hunt and with the pressure building on the Robins’ defence Clee picked up a booking for catching Tvaroh. Bacon advanced on to Batchelor’s pass but fired straight at Carnell and the keeper made a good save low down from Storer’s left foot strike. After Carnell had again denied Bacon, Clee just failed to reach Tames’ back post cross and Storer’s attempted lob had insufficient height.
Mills’ long pass then saw Hughes’ chested effort held by Carnell and Rowney might have settled things but fired too high after running on to Tames’ return pass.
