Robins toast first win over Brewers
Ashton finally got their season up and running with a first victory over their plucky visitors from Yorkshire in an FA Cup replay. Showing several changes from the first game the hosts got off to the worst possible start as 5 minutes in Kain Rogerson retrieved a ball from the by line leaving Ioan Evans a clear header to put the Brewers ahead.
Nicky Clee then took a cross field pass in his stride but fired over the top and Tames picked up a long ball and turned his effort past Ingham but also beat the far post. Just past the half hour Jonathan Hunt made a glaring miss from right in front of goal following a corner and John Pritchard half volleyed Sam Sheridan’s high ball narrowly past the right hand post. With pressure mounting and the interval approaching the equaliser arrived as Pritchard’s deep cross saw Connor Hughes’ header fired home for his first goal by Aaron Smith.
The second half opened with Day testing Carnell low down on the break and Rogerson’s free kick being headed straight at the keeper by Evans. Smith then doubled his tally with a far post finish from Liam Tomsett’s cross after Chris Rowney had won the ball but just past the hour the visitors were back all square as Alex Wiles side footed home Dos Santos’s pull back.
Three minutes later and Tames almost restored Ashton’s lead seeing the ball just cleared off the line but the hosts did regain the lead as Sheridan progressed along the by line and saw his delivery knocked home by stand-in centre back Josh Wilson. Clee’s long clearance then ended with Tames poking the ball wide of goal and Sheridan’s chip was just touched away with Wilson glancing the resulting corner just off target.
Sub Tom Field then fired Hughes’ pull back over the top but with a minute left his 1-2 with Hughes saw the winger set up Tames for a tap-in to secure a home tie in the next round against another Yorkshire outfit Pontefract Collieries.
