Battle of the Robins

Battle of the Robins

This Saturday sees the Robins of Tameside, Ashton United, come head to head with the travelling Robins from Wiltshire, Swindon Town as both teams look to accelerate their preparation for the fast-approaching season. With the fixture kicking off at 1 pm and the recent news that fans will be allowed back into the ground, the pre-season clash promises the return of passion and competitive edge around Hurst Cross despite being a friendly on paper.

Both teams so far have experienced very successful pre-season preparations with Ashton coming off the back of a 5-1 victory over Ashton Athletic on Wednesday night. However, Swindon will also be flowing with confidence following their 2-1 victory over Championship side, Coventry City and 8-0 thrashing of Nuneaton Town.

With Swindon being undoubtedly the toughest fixture so far in the Robins’ pre-season preparations, it will be a good chance to see key players such as new signing, Michael Raynes. Raynes’ involvement in the match could be vital as Ashton look to upset the odds and minimise the threat of the League One side.

The manager has emphasised his excitement for the fixture, hinting that he wants to set up his side to be “attacking, play on the front foot, try and impress them and show them how Ashton play”, but also added that “that it’ll be really difficult but we can see a different side for us, see how resolute we can be”.

Following Swindon’s League-winning campaign last year, the prospect of facing a club higher in the league ladder has brought a buzz around Hurst Cross, and with the unfortunate cancellation of the Bolton Wanderers friendly, this fixture against Swindon presents a fantastic opportunity for the players to get right up to scratch before the start of the new season and hear the support of our fans again.
