Ashton Utd 1 Clitheroe FC 0 Buildbase FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round 31.10.20
Brewster the Master
A goal on the stroke of half time was enough for the hosts to progress at Hurst Cross although the visitors may well feel hard done to do given the final result. Connor Taylor had arrived in the centre of Ashton’s defence but Clitheroe were first to threaten as ex- Robin Billy Priestley glanced a header beyond the far post from Conor Gaul’s cross and Gary Stopforth’s pass then set Kielen Adams running free but his lob landed on the roof of the net.
Greg Hartley had to pull off a great low save from Adams after Iywrah Gooden’s pass had picked him out and Gaul then headed Gooden’s cross straight at Hartley. Just before the half hour Millenic Alli was fouled as he released the ball and saw his free kick deflected needing a full length save from Thompson.
With the interval imminent Louis Almond saw a shot saved at the near post by Chris Thompson but the rebound fell to Michael Brewster to roll a shot into the net. Almond should have got a shot away in the second half having cut inside Priestley but Terry Cummings blocked just in time and another ex-Ashton player Danny Wilkins was denied close in by Hartley running into the area. Sub Liam Tomsett almost made an immediate impact heading John Pritchard’s free kick beyond the far post but the visitors could have still forced penalties as a couple of blocks in the home area saw the ball break to Cole Lonsdale who put a rocket onto the inside of the post and another sub Craig Hobson completely misplaced a free header from Oscar O’Neill’s deep cross.
