Linnets inflict first defeat

Despite the best efforts of Storm Francis, Ashton’s latest friendly went ahead thanks to the hosts’ artificial pitch. The first period was a forgettable one with the elements largely the winner, a high ball seeing Brad Lynch go down under challenge to no avail. With the ball zipping off the surface Hardcastle picked up a loose pass just before the half hour but fired over the top and Tom Bentham made room in the area but gave the keeper a comfortable save.

Runcorn were playing against the wind after the turnaround and within 5 minutes had moved ahead as a right wing cross saw Ryan Brooke’s first touch allow him to slide the ball past the Robins’ keeper with his second. Josh Wilson immediately brought a low save out of the keeper at the other end from Pritchard’s cross and Ben Wharton then set up Craig Lindfield who brought a good low save out of the keeper with Ewan Murray failing to convert the rebound.

Jake Cottrell fired wide for the visitors on his left foot after a corner was not properly cleared and Sam Sheridan also forced a good low save but Wharton could have had the last word as he turned inside and saw his shot saved at the near post.
