Robins take on Stafford in a relegation six-pointer

It’s back-to-back home games for the Robins as they face a crucial clash against bottom-of-the-table Stafford Rangers.

Our first home fixture of the new year saw Ashton fall to a 2-0 defeat against high-flying South Shields, but with Stafford sitting in last place this fixture is a prime opportunity for Clegg’s side to pick up points. As for Stafford, they faced a similar fate as they lost to the same scoreline against 16th placed Grantham Town.

Stafford’s recent defeat sees them extend their losing streak to four games on the bounce. Ashton’s recent form has also seen them go six games without a win in the league so with both teams desperate for points, Saturday presents a classic six-point encounter.

With just 15 goals in the league campaign this season, Stafford are currently the lowest scoring side. The Robins haven’t faired much better in front of goal but Clegg will be hoping his two new forwards will be able to provide the goals that can propel Ashton up the table.

Meanwhile Stafford will be looking to sure up their defence and hope to stop Josh Wilson from adding to his 9-goal tally for the Robins.

The last time the sides met at Hurst Cross in 2018, the Robins came out victors after Dom Smalley scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

A win for the Robins could see them climb to just a point from 20th placed Gainsborough, but with games in hand, could put Ashton in a position to push on out of the relegation places.

Be sure to drop in at Hurst Cross and witness a vital game for Ashton as the bottom two sides battle for the three points.
