Robins take on top of the Table South Shields

Ashton United take on South Shields in their first home game of the New Year against table-toppers South Shields.

Last time out, the Robins played out a goalless draw away to local rivals Stalybridge Celtic on New Year’s Day. Whereas South Shields took all three points in their home fixture against Scarborough United coming out 2-1 winners.

South Shields prolific number nine Jason Gilchrist will be a hand full for the Ashton defence this Saturday, however, defender Luca Havern will look to secure a clean sheet, after his solid performance on New Year’s Day.

The Robins lay 21st in the league table, three points off climbing out of the relegation zone, however, opponents South Shields sit top of the league and are clear of second place by three points.

Last time out when the teams faced each other, it was Match week 2, and South Shields ran out comfortable winners beating Ashton 3-0 in the Northeast.

Michael Clegg was pleased with how the Robins have improved and progressed since he has taken charge and these past few weeks with tough fixtures will “make us as a group” and stride into this new year on a positive note after getting a point away at a strong Stalybridge.

Come on down to the mighty Hurst Cross on Saturday to watch the Beloved Ashton United take on top of the league, South Shields. What a cracker for a first home game of the New Year.
